Spain: A study about bullfights economic values.

A study by Professor Juan Medina of bullfights economic values, Los Valores Económicos de la Tauromaquia, has been presented in Forum Mundial do Cultura Taurina in Azores, Portugal.


  • According to Gallup study made in 2010, 17 400 000 Spanish are interested in bullfights. 
  • Barcelona bullring had an attendance of over 10 000 spectators in every one of the 12 bullfights held in the years 2009 - 2010.
  • In the year 2010 Barcelona´s 18 bullfights had a total attendance of 129 000 spectators.
  • In the year 2012, 5 496 452 tickets were sold to Spanish bullfights (1º, 2º, 3º class and portable bullrings)
  • Bullfight box office was 177 000 000 Euros in Spain in the year 2012.
  • Bullfight generated 23.5 million Euros in tax revenue for the Spanish state.
  • Spanish popular fiestas, where the bull was part of the celebrations, had an public of 19.3 million people.
  • In the year 2012, 5.5 million tickets were sold to the bullfights. 
  • In the year 2012 bullfight indirect income was 123 175 489 Euros.
  • In the year 2012, bullfight total income was 590 048 833 Euros.
  • The economic impact of bullfights in Madrid Feria de San Isidro was 54.7 million Euros, Pamplona San Fermin Feria: 20.3 million Euros, Sevilla Feria de Abril: 18.7 million Euros, Bilbao Semana Grande: 12.7 million Euros, Albacete: 6.5 million Euros.  
  • Years 1901 to 1910 an average of 239 bullfights were held each year. Years 1951 to 1960 an average of  273 bullfights were held each year. Years 2001 to 2010 an average of 875 bulfights were held each year.
  • Only Madrid, Andalucia, Valencia and Aragón have budget support for bullfights. Madrid´s support for bullfights was 1 410 851 Euros. Collected Tax revenue from bullfights was 3 000 000 Euros. Madrid Las Ventas bullring paid 2 325 000 Euros in rent to Madrid. Result is 2 400 000 Euros in Madrid´s favour. Aragón budjet support for bullfights was 1000 Euros.
