Spain: San Sebastián bullrings throughout the history

San Sebastián - Donostia has been in the center of bullfight controversy for years. Critics have questioned bullfights in San Sebastián while bullfight defenders have maintained bullfights alive.

Critics have argued that San Sebastián does not have bullfight tradition.

This is a list of all San Sebastián bullring with regular bullfights.

Year 1589: Bullfights take place at Erregusoro bullring.
Year ? : Bullfights take place at Intramuros bullring.
Year 1722: Bullfights take place at Plaza Nueva bullring.
Year 1851: Bullfights take place at Plaza de San Martín bullring. First of permanent bullrings of San Sebastián. Bullring was made of wood and had capacity of 6000 spectators.
Year 1870: Atocha bullring with capacity of 6000 spectators. Bullring was inaugurated by bullfighters Lagartijo and Frascuelo. Bullring was burnt during Carlist wars. New bullring was constructed in one month and it was named Atocha as well. Capacity of the new Atocha bullring was now 10000 spactators.
Year 1908: Martutene bullring. Martutene bullring was the first multi-purpose arena of San Sebastían. Bullring was inaugurated with a consert led by Richard Strauss.
Year 1913: El Chofre bullring. El Chofre bullring was one of the most important bullring in Spain until 1973 when El Chofre bullring fell victim to urban speculation and was demolished. A new borough was constructed where El Chofre once stood.
Year 1998: Illumbe roofed arena is inaugurated.
